NOTE: It's only my opinion.
When I think in religion, a thing that comes to my head is that's a lie, but... Even don't trusting in God, you can trust in the Biblia. I'm gonna explain it.
As you noticed, I don't believe in God. I think it's a way to control the thinking way of the people... But even "knowing" that, I've read the Biblia (more or less, because I read the most, but not all). This book it's like a science-fiction (miracles and stuff) biography of a lot of people who we don't exactly if they had lived truly in this world. It explain a lot of moral facts (it's really known that it have a lot of contradictions too), and it can be very good for people: they can find who they truly are. But also it's a very bad thing, because it can gives you a lot of prejudices (a lot, but a lot very big), and/or it can makes you think different (even being a contradiction for your real ideals, making feeling you bad and removing your self-esteem).
Because it's a thing that it can't be demostrated, there's a lot of people who believe in God. Maybe people who don't trust it can't say "It's a lie!", because they can't give a solid evidence about God's unexistance... But I think that if there's a God, why is he playing with us? Even knowing the unfair who is the life, even spending their whole lifes praying, even these things, there're people who "serfs" God! I think if it really exists, it would be better to be rebel... It's like "I've created you, but now I'm enjoying your suffer and I've given you rules to spent stupidily your short lives, unenjoying them".
With this, I'm not pretending to turn "believers" into atheists; of course not. When people feel alone and sad, they have to have a thing to trust on it, and maybe religion can be useful for these people. My conclusion is that people have to realise in what they want to believe really, without being influenced.
